Some Interesting Information About Banknotes

Another name for banknotes are bills. The origin of these notes was in China in the seventh Century. They were first introduced in Europe during the thirteenth century. Real bills were only used in the seventeenth century. banknotes

Made from cotton paper, other textile fibres are sometimes mixed into the paper to produce bills. Paper used in this process is waterproof. Bills have polyvinyl alcohol added to the note paper to make it tougher.

During the process of making the paper, a watermark which resembles a fine thread is added to the paper. This is a very intricate process. Bills have always been easy to forge. Plastic or Polymer notes were first issued in 1983. This was to prevent counterfeiting as this has become problematic, worldwide. The plastic, durable bill was produced in Australia for the first time.

Bills are destroyed by recycling every three years due to too much handling which wears them down. Bills go through a sorting machine, an inspector checks these bills and has to make a decision as to whether these bills should be destroyed or not. Criminals have always preferred cash as tracing is almost impossible even though these notes are numbered.

Collecting paper money bills as a hobby is called Notaphily. This is not as popular as coin collecting but nonetheless more people are starting to collect notes. Stamp collecting is still the most popular hobby. Collectors prefer new, freshly printed banknotes and value rare bills too.

Currency is issued mostly by a central bank within a particular country. Private banks sometimes issue currency in some countries too. Contaminated banknotes are always destroyed in order to prevent the spread of potential disease. For example, bills found on a body or notes that have been contaminated by blood, bodily fluids or drugs will be contaminated and will therefore be destroyed. The US Dollar is the most popular currency used internationally today.
