In the beginning, coins were produced with precious metals and used for conducting business. The banknote presented another form of money that did not cost as much to manufacture. However, there is a good and a bad side to using paper money.

The coin version of currency is made with a process that treats it for maximum durability and longer shelf life. The banknote is made of paper nowadays, and usually is worth significantly more than the coins. For this reason, the banknote has become the more often used type of money.

Since the banknote is much easier to make than the coins, criminals have learned to make fake money. Numerous countries have taken steps to prevent this. By making currency much more difficult to duplicate even with scanners and printers, it is much less likely that duplication can occur.

Currency is overprinted as a sign of political adjustments which usually happen sooner than new money can be printed. Numerous nations' currency now has implanted holograms as a safety measure. Versions that include polymer were made to enhance the strength of the paper and avert counterfeiting.

In the past, several resources other than paper have been used to print banknotes, including various textiles such as silk and even leather. Lately, they are prepared with a procedure that includes a watermark and special thread. It is a plain looking safety factor found in most of the paper money in circulation today.
